The Gaze from the Other Shore The Gaze from the Other Shore Drawing on the imagery of humans, whales, and shells, I merge the human face with marine life to form a hybrid being that carries the presence of both human and ocean. It appears like a memory rising from the sea, and also like the gaze the sea returns to humanity. Within an animist worldview, humans do not exist outside of nature, but as beings who coexist with and respond to all forms of life. As the marine environment continues to change, this face becomes both a witness and a question from the sea: If we were to see humanity from the perspective of the ocean, what would we have left behind? It asks us to listen humbly to the silence of the sea, and to reconsider the interdependent relationship between humans and the ocean.
